If $P(X=0)=1-P(X=1)$ and $E(X)=3V(X)$, the value of $P(X=0)$ is

Solution

Let $p=P(X=1)$

Then $P(X=0)=1-p$

$E(X)=p$

$V(X)=p(1-p)$

Given $p=3p(1-p)$

$1=3(1-p)$

$1=3-3p$

$3p=2$

$p=\frac{2}{3}$

Therefore $P(X=0)=1-p=\frac{1}{3}$
