A company has a choice of two languages $L_1$ and $L_2$ to develop a software for their client. Number of LOC required to develop an application in $L_2$ is thrice the LOC in language $L_1$. Also, software has to be maintained for next $10$ years. Various parameters for two languages are given below to decide which language should be preferred for development.
PARAMETER$L_1$$L_2$
Man-year needed for developmentLOC/1000LOC/1000
Development costRs. 70,000Rs. 90,000
Cost of Maintenance per yearRs. 1,00,000Rs. 40,000
Total cost of project includes cost of development and maintenance. What is the LOC for $L_1$ for which cost of developing the software with both languages must be same?

Solution

Let LOC for $L_1=x$

Then LOC for $L_2=3x$

For $L_1$:

Development cost $=\frac{x}{1000}\times70000=70x$

Maintenance cost for $10$ years:

$10\times100000=1000000$

Total cost for $L_1$:

$70x+1000000$

For $L_2$:

Development cost $=\frac{3x}{1000}\times90000=270x$

Maintenance cost for $10$ years:

$10\times40000=400000$

Total cost for $L_2$:

$270x+400000$

Now both costs are same:

$70x+1000000=270x+400000$

$600000=200x$

$x=3000$
