Given below are two statements:

Statement I: A genetic algorithm is a stochastic hill-climbing search in which a large population of states is maintained.

Statement II: In nondeterministic environments, agents can apply AND-OR search to generate contingent plans that reach the goal regardless of which outcomes occur during execution.

In the light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below:

Solution

Statement I is incorrect.

A genetic algorithm maintains a population of states, but it is generally considered a variant of stochastic beam search, not simple stochastic hill-climbing.

Hill-climbing usually works with one current state, while genetic algorithm works with a population of states and uses selection, crossover and mutation.

So, Statement I is false.

Statement II is true.

In nondeterministic environments, actions may have more than one possible outcome.

AND-OR search is used to handle such situations.

It generates contingent plans, where the next action depends on the outcome that actually occurs.

So, Statement II is true.

Therefore, Statement I is incorrect but Statement II is true.
